Prosodically conditioned articulatory variations: A review

چکیده
Utterances are comprised of words belonging to various syntactic classes (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.). The arrangement of these words follows precise syntactic rules, specified in the Grammar of the language. Words are organized into syntactic constituents, and syntactic constituents are organized into a hierarchical tree-like syntactic structure. For example, in the utterance "the little girl sings a song," the determiner, adjective and noun "the little girl" form a Noun Phrase, and the verb, determiner and noun "sings a song" form a Verb Phrase. The Noun Phrase and Verb Phrase then form a constituent at a higher level in the hierarchy: a Sentence. The organization of lower-level units into higher-level units, their order, and their syntactic roles create the meaning of the utterance. Let us consider sentence (1), which is ambiguous:

On the articulatory bases of prominence in Italian
This study reports the first results of a research aimed to investigate how segmental variation is conditioned by prosody in Italian, by examining the acoustic and articulatory properties of syllables that are prominent at different levels of the prosodic hierarchy. We examined lip movement kinematics of unstressed, stressed and nuclearly accented syllables in order to understand the kinematic ...
متن کاملLexical Stress, Phrasal Accent and Prosodic Boundary in the Realization of Domain-Initial Stops in Dutch
This study examines the effects of prosodic boundaries, lexical stress, and phrasal accent on the acoustic realization of stops (/t, d/) in Dutch, with special attention paid to language-specificity in the phonetics-prosody interface. The results obtained from various acoustic measures show systematic phonetic variations in the production of /t d/ as a function of prosodic position, which may b...

This paper describes the design and evaluation of prosodically-sensitive concatenative units for a Persian text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis system. Thesyllables used are prosodically conditioned in the sense that a single conventional syllable is stored as different versions taken directly from the different prosodic domains of the prosodically labeled, read sentences. The three levels of the Per...
متن کاملInteraction between general prosodic factors and language-specific articulatory patterns underlies divergent outcomes of coronal stop reduction
Prosodically-conditioned reduction of /t/ and /d/ is examined in both English and Spanish using real-time magnetic resonance imaging. Results indicate that in both languages, the displacement of all three articulators used to create tongue tip closure (tongue tip, tongue body, and jaw) is conditioned by the duration of the movement. This suggests that reduction is a gradient rather than categor...
متن کاملA foot domain account of prosodically-conditioned substitutions.
Children's prosodically conditioned substitutions have been recently described in terms of syllable structure. In this paper we present an alternative analysis, based on the position of the consonant within the foot. We review data from a previous case study (Chiat, 1989) that provide evidence in favour of a foot domain account and against the syllable structure account. One consequence of this...
